(Grenzhausen, Germany, 1903-36), steins circa 1903, salt-glazed stoneware with enamel hand painting and hinged pewter covers with tall thumbpieces, Ludwig Hohlwein decorator, impressed “R.MERKELBACH/GRENZHAUSEN” with shape # “2176” and painted in brown "H8" and H12", 7 in.,. Condition: good condition. Notes: These steins are from an early set decorated by Hohlwein using the technique of painting enamels directly on the stoneware. Later examples with the same patterns were printed.. Provenance: A Delaware Private Collection
