(W.M. Penland, Buncombe County, Pole Creek area, 1868-1945) stoneware churn with Albany slip glazed exterior, tan speckle alkaline glazed interior, applied strap and lug handles, flared rim, stamped "WM PENLAND" below incised "6" at shoulder, flared rim with lid shelf in interior, 19-1/4 in.; storage jar attributed to J.H. Stone, Buncombe County, North Carolina, mid to late 1800s, runny blackish green over yellowish green alkaline glaze, low profile applied strap handles, wide flared rim with rim shelf, incised "4" capacity mark at shoulder, 15-1/2 in.

Condition

glaze voids and anomalies as made, surface abrasions, Penland churn with 3 in. loss to exterior of rim, 1-1/2 in. loss to inside of rim in same area, small chips to lug handle, minor chips to rim shelf, two hairlines in glaze to interior wall, Stone jar with 1-1/2 in. loss to glaze at belly with associated abrasions, other abrasions to glaze around belly, other minor surface abrasions
