Note: The area was a popular resort on the Devon coast where many artists and authors visited. The list includes Jane Austen and her family in 1802, Joseph W. M. Turner, Thomas Luny, William Spreat, William Daniell, John White Abbott, Francis Towne, Thomas Girten and others.

An area scholar states, "Near Teignmouth 1802 is a view looking east towards Exmouth in the distance (which you can see as the land mass in the background). The rock in the sea (which has been eroded in the middle) is known as 'the parson and clerk' and that helps to identify the location.

From the Window of the Drawing Room at the Library Teignmouth 1802 is a view looking west from Teignmouth and shows the Ness at Shaldon - a red sandstone headland at the mouth of the river Teign. The Library at that time may have been Mr Croydon's Library in Teignmouth (which also had a billiard room and acted as an accommodation bureau and theatre booking agency)."
