Calling card, "Lafayette", inscribed verso "For Meredith Johnson/en souvenir of/his second visit to/ La Grange/June 1962/Josee and Rene Chambrun", engraving on card, 1-5/8 x 2-3/4 in., painted wood frame with sandwiched glass, [foxing, not removed from frame]; with a portrait said to be "General Marquis de Lafayette, reverse painted glass, 9-1/2 x 7-1/2 in., 19th century gilt wood frame, [breaks and some loss to glass, flaking, moisture damage] . Notes: In 1956, the papers of the Marquis de Lafayette were discovered in the fifteenth century Chateau La Grange by the late Count René de Chambrun, a direct descendant of Lafayette.. Provenance: Gift from Comte René & Josée de Chambrun, gifted to Meredith Johnson, Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1962, upon a return visit to Chateau La Grange; Private Collection
