round, with Palmetto and two ovals, evocative of South Carolina State Seal, marked "1776", diameter 2-1/2 in.; rectangular, with eagle grasping arrows and olive branch, surrounded by 13 stars, possible military issue, 2-1/4 x 3-1/4 in.ÿ - Note: The round piece offered here, ostensibly a buckle, is similar to an object sold by Cowan's on October 31, 2018 as Lot #812, "A Rare and Beautiful South Carolina Cartridge Box Plate." That single item lot realized $5,288. There are subtle visual variances between the two seemingly identical discs, most noticeable at the logotype of the date.ÿ - Provenance: From the Collection of Ashley Halsey, Jr., Alexandria and Spotsylvania, Virginia
both with surface wear consistent with age, underside to each with some degree of corrosion, rectangular buckle with some solder evidenceÿ
