(Japanese/American, 1854-1912) Watercolor (plus perhaps gouache) on paper of Kannon goddess of mercy guarded (captured?) by the guardians of the four directions, with Aoki’s typical storytelling with comical figures, signed “T. Aoki” with calligraphy inscription lower left, modern frame, 27-1/2 x 21-1/2 in.. Condition: old tear and repair to lower center right edge. Notes: Toshio Aoki was an early traveler from Japan to the U.S. and was an active promoter of Japonisme in California. He exhibited at the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893, and his work was the subject of an exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1924.
