Note: The notoriety of being the first follows Toots Zynsky. She was Dale Chihuly?s first student and assisted him in the founding and establishment of the Pilchuk Glass Center in Washington state. She invented the filet de verre technique and co-invented a thread pulling machine to create the fine glass fibers. She was the first artist of a piece of contemporary glass commissioned and acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
