Portrait of Major George Bender, 1830, transcription of original signature, date and inscription attached verso, oil on canvas, 30-1/4 x 25-1/4 in.; possibly period carved gilt wood frame, 38 x 33 in.

Major George Bender, who was born in Boston, Massachusetts, joined the United States Army in 1812 and was promoted to Major of the 5th Infantry on April 23, 1830. The present portrait was begun on February 8, 1830 and completed on March 4, 1830.

wax and linen lined on new stretchers, stabilized crackle, areas of retouch; frame with wear commensurate with age, small areas of loss to decoration

Private Collection, acquired from the artist; By descent to the present owner; Christie's, New York, NY, March 4, 2010, sold for $8,750; Private Georgia Collection
