(Dutch, 1596-1667) Sporting Scene with a Nobleman on Horseback, said to be Signeur de Moorseween, unsigned, oil on canvas, 27-3/4 x 24-3/8 in.; gilt wood and composition frame, lined, restretched on old stretcher, craquelure, scattered light retouch, abrasions at edges; frame with abrasions and minor losses. Notes: Comments included in the exhibition catalog include the attribution to Thomas De Keyser by Dr. William R. Valentiner, stating, "it is my opinion a characteristic fine work of Th. De Keyser, the excellent Amsterdam portrait painter. It is painted in 1660-65 and related in style to several small equestrian portraits in the museums in Amsterdam (dated 1660), Franfurt am Main, Dresden (1661), Brediusmuseum, The Hague etc. The landscape is according to Dr. Oldenbourg probably by A.V.D. Velde, but in my opinion more like Th. D. Keyser himself…" A label verso suggests an attribution to G. Terburg and J.B. Weenix Literature: Rudolf Oldenbourg, [Thomas de Keyser's Taetigkeit als Maler]. 1911, p. 78, No. 58; Catalogue exhibition, Staedel, Frankfurt am Main, 1925, No. 113, ill. Pl. LXXXIV; Gallery of the Public Library of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, Winston-Salem, N.C., [Collectors' Opportunity], April 22-May 3, 1963, exhibition catalog, ill. P. 43 (accompanied by a copy of the catalog). Provenance: Baron Max von Goldschmidt-Rothshild, Frankfurt am Main: Pariset, Lyon; "Collection Gruyter et Bregge.." (label verso); Stadische Gallerie, Frankfurt am Main (label verso); Purchased by consigner after exhibition, circa 1963; Private Collection, North Carolina
