(American/Tennessee, 1832-1908)Tennessee landscape, 1874, signed lower right "T Schieler", oil on canvas, 27 x 48 in.; gold painted wood frame, 33 x 54 in. - Note: The most important photographer in Tennessee during the Civil Ware era, Theodore M. Schleier was also a noted painter, though not many of his paintings survive. As such this rare example is of particular importance. This landscape most likely depicts the topography close to Knoxville where he spent most of his time as an artist. Schlieier was also an inventor of early artificial lighting for photographers, a delegate to the 1872 Republican National Convention and a diplomat who served as U.S. Consul to Amsterdam.
