Notes: The Peabody Family and The Black Ball Line In 1817, ship owner Benjamin Marshall and others launched the storied Black Ball Line with transatlantic sailings out of New York. The Black Ball Line, with four ships, was the first carrier to offer regularly scheduled service between New York's South Street Pier and Liverpool, England. Prior to this event, all transatlantic sailing ships were general carriers with no fixed schedule and only sailed when they achieved a full cargo and passengers. In operation for more than 60 years and later making the transition to steam ships, The Black Ball Line took its name from its flag, a black ball on a red background and was extremely profitable for the owners and captains. Born into a family of historical seafarers, ship captains and businessmen, Enoch Wood Peabody (1822 NH - 1874 NY) captained numerous ships for The Black Ball Line and, in 1855, captain of the ship Neptune, Enoch W. Peabody married Cornelia Marshall, daughter of Benjamin Marshall and thus the Peabody family became principals of The Black Ball Line.. Provenance: Captain Richard Peabody (1731 MA - 1820 MA); Samuel peabody (1775 MA - 1859 MA); Enoch Wood Peabody (1822 NH - 1874 NY); Rushton Peabody (1867 NY - 1954 NY; Eugenia Peabody (1903 NY - 1977 CT), aunt of consigner; Private Savannah, Georgia Collection
