attributed to Greeneville, circa 1825, sideboard or huntboard, top with thick molded edge, three roomy dovetailed drawers with beaded edges, paneled sides, round tapered reeded legs with double cuffed feet, poplar secondary, 40 x 63-3/4 x 22-1/2 in.
Provenance: Sumpter Priddy, Alexandria, Virginia (accompanied by copy of March 7, 2008 write up, priced $28,500)
Note: Typical of sideboards from the Greeneville area, this example exhibits solid construction, native woods, and the use of three roomy, vertical drawers. Greeneville was an area primarily settled by craftsmen moving west from Virginia, like John E. Rose (1767-1860), cabinetmaker and carver. A dining table from the same period attributed to Rose illustrated in The Art and Mystery of Tennessee Furniture, Derita Williams, p. 131, fig. 127, has identical reeded legs and a very similar form of cuffed feet.
