Provenance: The Charleston Renaissance Gallery, South CarolinaNote:

The hog series began over 28 years ago when Blackwell was a graduate student at the University of South Carolina. They explore the rich and complex iconography of the American southeast and incorporate images from the artist's rural youth to his experience as an educator and embalmer / funeral director,  He also sites the court painting of Diego Velasquez (1599-1660) as an influence, including his portrayal of court jesters and dwarfs as equals to their masters.
