They explore the rich and complex iconography of the American southeast and incorporate images from the artist's rural youth to his experience as an educator and embalmer / funeral director, He also sites the court painting of Diego Velasquez (1599-1660) as an influence, including his portrayal of court jesters and dwarfs as equals to their masters.
