(American, early 19th century) Eight Nicholson Family Silhouettes dating from 1813-1820; Capt. Benjamin Nicholson; Mrs. Fern, Daughter of Commodore James Nicholson, U.S. Navy; Joseph Hopper Nicholson (2); Edward Nicholson; Mr. John Hallis; Annapolis; Mrs. Charlotte ..(?), John A. Parker, Michael Hays; along with five engravings of Shippen family members including "Reverendus Robertus Shippen, S.T.P.", engraved by James Fittler after W. Skelton, "Joseph Shippen/ Secretary of the Provencial Council", "Chas. Witting/ Mayor of Philadelphia 1748 &1756", etched by H. Wright Smith, and "William Shippen Esq." engraved by S. Harding (a total of 13 pieces), unsigned but all inscribed with sitter's identity, four hollow-cut cream paper over black silk, three hollow-cut cream paper over black ink, two hollow-cut with no backing, 3 x 2-3/4 to 5 x 4 in. (image sheets), four mounted on journal pages largest 7-5/8 x 5 in.; all unframed, two in poor condition with losses, tears and abrasions (John A. Parker, Michael Hays). Provenance: Some formerly from a journal or book dated 1802 and owned by Mrs. Rebecca Lloyd Nicholson (1770-1848), wife of Chief Justice Joseph Hopper; by descent in the Lloyd and Shippen Family
