Note: Sam Gilliam was an innovative color field painter who advanced the inventions associated with the Washington Color School. The Hirshhorn museum mounted his first sole exhibition in Washington, DC as a tribute to the artist and in his memory. Sam Gilliam: Full Circle (May 25-September 11, 2022), celebrated the artist's last works, most of which were executed in tondo.
