Johann Frederick Belo (German/American, 1806-1827), rich brown color, uppercase with panel doors and shelved interior over fitted desk with nine dovetailed drawers, inlaid kite escutcheons, poplar secondary, 93-1/2 x 46-1/2 x 22-1/4 in.
Note:Johann Frederick Belo arrived in Salem from the Moravian community of Herrnhut, Germany, in 1806. The unusual form of the feet on this chest and other pieces made in this shop is also seen on case furniture made in Herrnhut.
For reference, see accession number 943.1 in the collection of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts. The chest of drawers in the collection has the same detail at its bracket feet.
