(Japanese, 1900-1976)
early 20th century, important early documented mold-shaped square stoneware bowl, turquoise glaze with trailed brown flower and tendril design, 10 x 3 in.; with four reproduction images of period photographs of Totaro Sakuma. Condition: wear to one corner and rim. Notes: Sakuma-san gifted this bowl to Prof. Bennett with apologies for the “poor” quality of the work since it was made early in his pottery career. Prof. Bennett seemed to relish retelling the story.
