(Massachusetts, 1775-1845) The Ship [Genrous [sic] Friends] in Distress, signed lower right signed with monogram "RS", oil on panel, 12-7/8 x 20-3/4 in.; 19th century painted and gilt wood frame, retouch affecting less than 5% of surface with most at top left corner; frame regilt and painted, abrasions. Notes: The sloop [Generous Friends] helped to evacuate Loyalists from New York and transported them to New Brunswick in 1783. She later foundered in the Atlantic Ocean while on a voyage from Newfoundland to Exeter, Devon, in 1796..
