late 19th century, with "MONTICELLO HALL" at bottom, 38 cotton stars applied to linen gauze ground, 10 ft. 6 in. x 14 ft.. Notes: Monticello Hall was referred to a beer hall, restaurant and hotel in Richmond Virginia. Established in the late 1840s by Bavarian immigrant, Simon Steinlein, Monticello Hall became one of the most popular meeting places for German American living in Richmond.  A number of social/political organizations including the Turner Society (Sociale Turnverin) held rallies at Monticello Hall during the early stages of the Civil War.  In the 1860 Richmond Business Directory, Monticello Hotel’s location is listed as being on “Broad between 6th and 7th, Proprietor S. Steinlein”.  The establishment closed in the 1870s. Special thanks to Kathy Staples for her information on the banner’s significance.
