Charleston Leather Top Hat Box
American, circa 1820, tall hat-form cylinder with leather loop and strap handle on hinged top, interior with probably original printed fabric lining, brass clasp stamped "Turner", stamped on bottom "A. Robertson, Charleston, So Ca", top strap inscribed in ink "Alexander Robertson, Charleston, So Ca", 9-1/2 x 15 in., some separation to top rim band, some staining to leather on top, interior lining with tears and losses and some pest damage with wear around base interior rim. Notes: MESDA has documented William Turner as a trunk maker in Baltimore 1819-1821. A. Robertson is listed as a merchant on King Street in the 1803 and 1806 directories and as a factor later. Leather work documented to the early South is scarce and this is a fine and rare example.. Provenance: Private Collection, Atlanta
