New Market, Virginia, yellow house with fence flanked by two large trees, small outbuilding or gate to left of house, six-line top panel, stitched on bottom line "Virginia Miles Age 12 years New Market March 8th 1844", inner sawtooth border, strawberry vine outer border, silk on linen, 16 x 17 in.; wood frame with gilt cove molding, lot accompanied by copy of obituary for Virginia Miles Bouse from The Tyrone Daily Herald, July 24, 1897Note: The 1850 U.S. Census lists Virginia Miles as 17 years old and living in Shenandoah, Virginia. Marriage records from Virginia indicate that she married George Bouse, a Methodist minister, in 1851. They lived for a time in Maryland and later in Taylor, Centre County, Pennsylvania.
