attributed to James Sheetz, (1851-1923), Woodstock area, Virginia, rearing horse with old dry polychrome paint surface, leather seat, inset glass eyes and horse hair tail, now mounted on a modern black finished metal stand, 58 x 45 x 30 in. including stand
Note: Sheetz, son of a Civil War veteran, is thought to have created a full-size working carousel with 10 carved horses. It is thought that Sheetz and his carousel traveled throughout the Shenandoah Valley. Two of Sheetz's horses are now in the collections of the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. For more on Sheetz, see Maine Antiques Digest, March 27th, 2018.
