American, 1857, pear-shaped pitcher with floral and scroll repoussé decoration, scroll hinge, inscribed "To/J. A. Van Dyke/from/the relatives of the late/John G. Starr/of Savannah Geo./an officer of the Nicaraguan Army, in grateful memory/of his kindness to him on arriving sick and wounded/at New York/April 16, 1857", 9-1/2 in.; with matching waiter, grape, vine and leaf feet, inscribed "J. A. Van Dyke", unmarked, 8 in.; with six documents including original letter sent to Mr. Van Dyke mentioning the silver pitcher and waiter; a hand written copy of the "Tribute of Respect", dated May 30th 1857; "Tribute of Respect" cutting from local newspaper, dated May 15th 1857; other copies, jug marked "S. Wilmot" (Samuel Wilmot, New Haven, Connecticut, working 1800-1808; Georgetown, South Carolina, circa 1825; Charleston, South Carolina, circa 1837; Savannah, Georgia, circa 1850), 27.29 oz. T., both in good condition
