Northern neck of Virginia, Maryland, or Irish, mid 18th century, with shaped arms and two vaseform splats, serpentine seat rails with conforming slip seat, cabriole front leg with C scrolls, turned stretchers in rear feet, 32 x 32 x 26-1/2 in.
Provenance: frame with old label indicating "purchased by consignor at estate sale in eastern Maryland many years ago" (appears to be an old auction description)
Note: The origin of this chair is difficult to determine definitively. It relates to Virginia and Maryland chairs of the period, and has Maryland retrieval history, but no other southern examples with serpentine rails and carved knees are known.

old patch and repair at front toe, one splat with one inch face patch across bottom and two small patches at upper corners, some later pinning at seat rails, some later seat blocking (small back block appears to be original), slip seat partially replaced (two framing elements are period and possibly original), area of possible refacing on one knee return, front knee with tracery lines, likely from carving now removed, old break and repair at one arm
