blade 35-1/2 in., ricasso marked "Columbia S.C.",ÿwith scabbard - Note: The Palmetto Armory was founded in 1849 by William Glaze, James Boatwright, and Benjamin Flagg to produce arms for the state of South Carolina. These arms included rifles, muskets, pistols, and sabers. This saber being offered has accompanying paper tags which, unfortunately, have also suffered the ravages of time and are largely illegible. Barely discernible is "Culpeper, [sic] Va.," which one could reasonably conclude was the excavation site for this important saber.ÿ - Provenance: From the Collection of Ashley Halsey, Jr., Alexandria and Spotsylvania, Virginia

Condition

almost certainly an excavated example with corrosion throughout, leather long since deteriorated from grip, loose construction at handle, broken piece to knuckle guard, ricasso stamp remarkably decipherable considering extent of environmental damageÿ
