South Carolina, 1790-1800, each with carved mahogany frame, shield backs, over-the-rail upholstery with brass tacking, reeded tapered legs, rich dark color and old surface, ash and cypress secondary woods, 39 in.

Provenance: Purchased in 1959 from Frank L. Horton from Mrs. J. Austin Hughes of Charleston South Carolina. In 1961/62 Frank Horton placed the chairs on loan to the Rowan County Museum in South Carolina where they remained until 2018; Deaccesioned from MESDA and Old Salem to benefit the Acquisition Fund

Note: Further wood analysis indicated white pine, sweet gum and ash are the secondary woods, indicating a possibly New York origin for the chairs.

Condition

chair 62.2.1: breaks and repairs at rear stiles, spline repair to one rib of back, one section of drapery likely restored, generally good; both with typical surface wear and flaws, both in old surface (probably original surface with later overcoat)
