Portsmouth, 1805-1815, very fine example with dramatic flame birch veneers with mahogany banding, drop panel skirt on original tall French feet, underside with period inscription "Nath.Souther", 37 x 40-1/4 x 21 in.

Note: Nathaniel Souther, whose name is inscribed on the bottom of this chest, was a baker with a house and shop on the corner of Cottar's Lane (now Franklin Street) and Pleasant Street in Portsmouth. excellent condition overall original feet and most blocking, some later paint at back of feet, one rear foot with possible old veneer patch and one small chip, top with typical veneer cracks and distress from shrinkage, some varnish bloom, other very minor veneer patches and surface flaws
