(British, 1902-1995), swirled in matte grey-green and pale pink volcanic glazes, baluster form with long neck and dramatic flared rim, impressed "LR" seal in bottom, 11-3/4 in., Wax residue on base. Notes: Dame Lucy Gomperz Rie was born in Austria and studied pottery under Michael Powolny at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule. In 1938, she fled Nazi Austria and emigrated to England, settling in London. Her pottery is displayed in collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the York Art Gallery in the UK, and Paisley Museum in Scotland. Her studio was moved and reconstructed in the new ceramics gallery at the Victoria and Albert Museum where the exhibit opened in 2009..
