Dublin, circa 1750s, each with dense mahogany frames with ball and claw feet and turned stretchers, pale burgundy print upholstery, 45 x 30 x 31 in., seat height 19-1/2 in. - Provenance: These two pairs of chairs appear to be from a large set of seating furniture commissioned in the 1750s by Joseph Leeson, 1st Earl of Milltow (d.1783) for Russborough, County Wicklow. It is difficult to distinguish between the frames of the two pairs. One pair, possibly this pair, was likely sold in the Tom Devenish Collection of Highly Important English Furniture, New York, 24 April, 2008, lot 35 (hammer price $70,000). Another pair form the set sold Christie's, Lyons Demesne sale, July 2011 lot 72 for L39,650. Another pair, likely one of the pairs offered here, is illustrated in the 2013 Mallett catalog, pg. 168-169. One of the pairs of chairs offered here was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, "Ireland: Crossroads of Art and Design, 1690-1840", pg. 103. Because the upholstery on both pairs of chairs has been changed, it is difficult to determine which pair was exhibited and the exact provenance of each pair; Estate of Robert K. Johnson, Aiken, South Carolina

Condition

both appear to be in good condition with minor repairs at talons, minor crack at one front ankle, patch and repair at back of one rear foot, modern upholstery generally good (not examined under upholstery)
