early form with dark to light black glaze to body with green alkaline glaze at base edge, articulated nose, mouth, and chin below thick applied brow with inset eyes pierced with rocks representing pupils, spout hole at back of head, likely southern in make, possibly Alabama, attributed to unknown African American craftsman, 10-1/4 in.. Condition: glaze voids and anomalies as made, abrasions to surface and glaze loss throughout, loss of both arm form handles and spout, base edge wear and chips. Notes: Exhibited in “Two Centuries of Black American Art”, Los Angeles County Museum of Art: September 30-November 21, 1976, The High Museum of Art, Atlanta: January 8-February 20, 1977, Museum of Fine Arts, Dallas: March 30-May 15, 1977, The Brooklyn Museum, June 25th-August 21, 1977, Cat. No. 5, from the Collection of Franklin Fenenga noted California archaeologist who worked for the Smithsonian, was director of Museums for the Georgia Historical Commission, and worked for several University’s including California State University from which he retired from in 1987, photocopies from the exhibits catalogue accompany the piece, also pictured in John Vlach’s “The Afro American Tradition in Decorative Arts", pg. 92..
