Provenance: Peter Sawyer, Exeter, New Hampshire, August 2003 (accompanied by copy of receipt for $12,000); From the Collection of Elbert H. Parsons, Jr., Huntsville, Alabama

Note: Peter Sawyer sold this as Boston or North Shore, Massachusetts; correspondence in the file between Bert and Betsy Davison, as well as Harry Alden microanalysis identifying white pine and soft maple, suggest an attribution to coastal Virginia or North Carolina, circa 1770-1790, in the Neat and Plain style noted in The Furniture of Coastal North Carolina: 1700-1820, John Bivins, 1988, pp. 275, 357-59, 399 and 407.
