Boston interest, probably Scottish, 18th century, concertina form with highly figured solid mahogany fold over top, cabriole legs with deeply carved leaf and rocaille knees and hairy paw feet, 28-1/2 x 30-3/4 x 14-1/2 in.

Note: This table appears to be the prototype and design impetus for an important group of Boston hairy paw foot furniture of the 18th century. The carver of this table may be a craftsman that immigrated from Scotland and ended up making related furnishings in Boston. One candidate is Scottish immigrant James Graham (1728-1808). For more on Graham, see Kem Widmer, "A Scotsman, Thomas Chippendale, and the Green Dragon Tavern", Colonial Society of Massachusetts, Vol. 88. For more on this group, see also Luke Beckerdite, “ Carving Practices in Eighteenth Century Boston,” in New England Furniture: Essays In Memory of Benno M. Forman (Boston: Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, 1987) and Beckerdite, “The Concept of Copying in the Eighteenth-Century Carving Trade,” in American Furniture, edited by Luke Beckerdite (Haverton, PA.: Casemate Publications/Oxbow Books for the Chipstone Foundation, 2020).

Provenance: Old label at underside "Mrs. Jennings"; Property from the Estate of Gerald J. and Rosalie Kahn, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
