Carolina Paint-Decorated Yellow Pine Side Table
Chatham/Wake County area, fine original painted surface, the drawer facing inscribed “Rebecca Griffin”, the skirt dated 1845, stylized yellow paint decoration on black and red grain-painted brown, yellow pine throughout, cut nail construction, turned legs and feet, 30-1/2 x 29 x 24-1/2 in.. Condition: excellent original condition throughout, the top with minor warping and shrinkage separations (crack at front), replaced brass drawer pull. Notes: This rare table is one of several known pieces thought to have been decorated in a similar manner in the Chatham/Wake County area. Several of the other known related examples are in museum collections; a chest at MESDA with an Eagle motif with related embellishments that descended in the James R. Edwards (1855 – 1929) family of Chatham County and dated 1801, another chest at Williamsburg, MESDA r. f. 31606, a third chest at the High Museum in Atlanta and a fourth documented by MESDA (r. f. 5560). The decorator of this table and the other related pieces remains unknown.
