English, probably mid to late 17th century, octagonal socket with indistinct stamp and cast rope work decoration along the rim, ribbed shaft over a circular mid drip pan, octagonal base, underside stamped "WPE", 7-1/2 in.Note: This pewter candlestick is illustrated in Old Domestic Base-Metal Candlesticks from the 13th to 19th Century: Produced in Bronze, Brass, Paktong and Pewter, by Ronald F. Michelis, 1978, page 88, ill. 127.This unusual example shows the evolution in design from all-circular to all-octagonal, with this example having an octagonal socket and base but a circular drip pan. Just prior to 1650, the pewter "flowered" (flared) base candlesticks took on an octagonal shape in the foot rim. Gradually, the socket rim followed in design, and then the drip pan. The rope work decoration appears on only a few pewter candlestick examples after 1660.A very similar pewter candlestick sold at Christie's, London, Important Early English Pewter The 'Little' Collection, Lot 114, April 30, 2007 for £14,400.https://www.christies.com/lot/lot-an-english-pewter-candlestick-circa-1670-4894580/?from=salesummary&intObjectID=4894580&lid=1 - Provenance: purchased from Alistair Sampson Antiques, London for £5,500; Property from the Collection of Dudley and Constance Godfrey
