Eastern Tennessee or Southwestern Virginia, possibly Abingdon area, circa 1800, rare serpentine form, in cherry with mahogany veneer, deeply shaped serpentine drawers with inlaid kite escutcheons, upper drawer fitted with dividers, flanked by reeded pilasters, set with inlaid capitals and bases, fluted and fan decorated shaped skirt, dovetailed construction with yellow pine and poplar secondary, original shaped french feet, 39-3/4 x 42 x 22-1/2 in.Note: This rare chest is among the finest examples known from Eastern Tennessee or Southwestern Virginia. Among the only serpentine examples of the form, it is further distinguished by its mahogany veneers, inlaid pilasters, and distinctive fluted skirt.
