(American/Tennessee, 1844-1907)

Portrait of Robert E. Lee and Traveler, signed lower right, "Carl Gutherz", inscribed verso "Mirs Owen", oil on canvas, 27-1/2 x 39-3/4 in.; modern painted and gilt wood frame, 32-1/2 x 45 in.

Note:  it is possible  that this painting is after a photographic print of the same name. The print depicts the same images as a painting signed “Guntherz” that hangs at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Tennessee. The first depiction of this image is said to have burnt in a fire in Richmond, Virginia. The painting being offered bears the name “Carl Guthetz”. It is unclear whether this is a lost copy by the artist, or a copy by another artist who has chosen to add his name.
