rare and large collection of French Revolution commemorative buttons, circa 1790, Paris, each with engraved title of event depicted at bottom, hand-colored stipple engravings on bezel set in copper buttons, 1-1/2 in. diameter; accompanied by wood display case, good condition. Notes: These buttons were created to both celebrate and support the events of the French Revolution. It depicts the Royal family, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, at The Tuilleries palace escaping to Versailles for their safety and their subsequent return to Paris under guard in October of 1789. One button shows "Mr. Mounier, President" assuming the throne, contrasting that of the King and Queen depicted in another. The watercolors used echo the new French Republic's colors and patriotism. Occasionally these come up for sale one at a time making this group rare except for collections held by institutions.
