(or Philippe, French/Britain, 1689-1760) Miss Wentworth (probably either Elizabeth, born 1730, or Julia, born 1733) a young girl in a formal garden with dog begging on the edge of a fountain, signed lower left "Ph. Mercier/ Fecit Ano. 1740", oil on canvas, 42 x 50 in.; fine 18th century carved and gilt wood frame. Notes: The sitter was the child of Sir William Wentworth (1686-1763), 4th Baronet of Bretton. It is possible that Lot 623, also purchased at Tillou Gallery might represent the other sister, although unsigned. Literature: Ingamells, John, and Raines, Robert.
