Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, signed and dated "Christianna Barger's work done in the 8th year of her age 1831", with birds, butterflies, and floral sprays bordered by scrolling strawberry vines, sight 21-3/8 x 17-1/4 in.; distressed gilt wood and cove molded frame, 26-1/8 x 22 x 1-1/4 in.
Provenance: Greg K. Kramer & Co., Robesonia, Pennsylvania, April 18, 1998 (accompanied by copy of receipt); Collection of Karen Shackleford Moore, Baltimore, Maryland
Note: Through cursory research, the B and M Barger mentioned on the sampler are almost certainly Benjamin Barger and his wife Martha (nee Tunecliff), who were married in England in 1814. The couple moved to Philadelphia at some point before 1818, where they had five children. Christianna was their third, being born around 1823 and dying at some point after 1888. She married one Ephraim Shea Whittaker of Cumberland County, New Jersey, and had five daughters. Additionally, for a similar example of the floral stitching, please see Girlhood Emrboidery by Betty Ring, Volume II, p. 357.
