(New York/California, 1877-1957) "Boots" Mallory (1913-1958), signed lower right "Penhryn Stanlaws", pastel on illustration board, 40-3/8 x 28-1/4 in.; original pickled wood frame, laid down on cardboard; frame with abrasions. Notes: Boots Mallory was a film actress and dancer. She joined the Ziegfeld Follies in 1931. After moving to Hollywood, she starred in mostly B-grade films after the devastating premier of "Hello Sister!". In 1933 she married James Cagney's brother, William, and in 1937 married actor Herbert Marshall. A striking beauty, she was photographed by George Hurrell and painted by the pin-up artist Rolf Armstrong. She died in 1958 at age 45..
