Note: After serving in the Franco-Prussian War, Paris-born Mesples studied under renowned Academic painter Jean-Léon Gerome. Though best known for his paintings of dancers, Mesples was also a successful caricaturist, engraver, and musician. His early caricatures, often witty and playful, appeared in Le Monde Illustre. Recognized for his attention to detail, he was commissioned by the Museum of Natural History in Paris to illustrate seasonal botanical works. He exhibited regularly at major Parisian salons and became a familiar figure in Montmartre during the Belle Epoque, known for capturing lively, joyful scenes filled with character. A standout year for Mesplès was when he showcased vibrant portraits of dancers, including the celebrated Cléo de Mérode, and was honored with a knighthood. He later composed music and patriotic songs, remaining active and creative throughout his life. He died in Paris, remembered for his versatility and artistic spirit.
