French, probably late 19th century, each with original black marble top, over ebonized and bronze mounted case, figural bronze mounts, single glazed door opening to a veneered interior with adjustable shelves, cabinets are sequentially stamped on tops "119" and "120", and each has an additional stamp "1846", 48 x 33-1/2 x 15 in., Provenance: accompanied by document from Shindler's Antique Shop, Charleston, South Carolina, dated August 14, 1949, certifying that "the cabinet sold to you was bought from one Mrs. Mayberry, 38 SO. Battery, Charleston, South Carolina. and was left to her by the Manigault family of South Carolina... the match to it was purchased from the Manigault Estate some years ago at a price supposed to be in the thousands..." The Shindler document suggests that the cabinet is 18th century and was purchased by Gabriel Manigault. While we feel these cabinets are later in date, variations in surface treatment support the idea that these were separated at one point and reunited, presumably by the Aubrey Hancock family.; Estate of Aubrey Hancock, Charleston, South Carolina
Condition
good condition overall, one cabinet with later black paint at top and back, both with original marble tops with some stains and edge chips, some finish distress to interiors with fading and color variation (one more extensive than the other)
