Wall Screens
Japanese, 18th/19th century, each oil on canvas screen depicting scenes from the "Genji Tale" on a gilt ground, matching black and gold silk borders, black-lacquered frames with gilt bronze corner mounts and tacking, each panel 66 x 24 in., screen 66 x 96 in. overall. Condition: areas of paint and gilt losses, some tearing to images and puncture holes on reverse, generally good condition for age. Notes: The "Genji Tale" is a major work from the 11th century Japanese literature, attributed to Murasalci Shibuku. Genji is the son of the emperor and, as he cannot inherit the throne, he originates a new imperial branch.
