Abeokuta, Nigeria, probably 19th century, pair of stylized male and female bronze figures in a seated position, attached by a chain at the top of conical headdresses, oversized facial features, mounted on a velvet covered plinth, 10-3/4 in. overall

Notes: These figures are used by a secret sect and religious group in Nigeria, and the Republic of Benin, called the Ogboni, which speak the Yoruba language.  The male and female figure, linked together, form Edan (the earth.)

both with firing anomalies as made, some surface areas of wear due to age, some green oxidation spots on bodies
