Enameled, Parcel Gilt and [Grisaille] Painted Plates
Qianlong (1736-1739), each octagonal plate with central armorial cartouche with the arms of Treves (argent three boars' heads couped azure), the rim with four alternating [grisaille] panels with birds and prunus branches, 9 in.. Condition: both rough at edges with glaze losses, otherwise good condition. Notes: A plate with the same design is illustrated in Howard, [Chinese Armorial Porcelain,] Vol. 1, p. 317.J2. The service was probably made for Peregrine Treves, the postmaster general at Bengal. The same coat of arms was also borne by Bosum of Windley in Norfolk..
