Note: Lafayette with the Battle of Yorktown to his left, his horse and his attendant James Armistead at his proper left side. Armistead was a slave who volunteered to serve with Lafayette and eventually became a spy for the Revolutionary cause. In light of these contributions, Lafayette actively supported James winning his freedom from the Virginia General Assembly in 1787.
