Dresse sur les Memoires le plus Nouveaux Par Le Sieu A S..., Amsterdam, 1696, hand colored engraving on thick laid paper, plate 22-1/4 x 18-3/8 in.; frame 31-7/8 x 27-7/8 in. - Note: This is likely the first state of Mortier's map of the Carolinas, bearing the imprint "Pierre Mortier".This map references the short lived colony "Charles Ville ou Charles Towne", settled in 1664 along the Cape Fear river. By the end of 1667, the colony had been abandoned. The second Charles Towne was founded in 1670 in southern Carolina, now present day Charleston, South Carolina. - Provenance: Private South Carolina Collection
