Six botanical watercolors from the Maw-Wood sketchbook, circa 1860-70, unsigned, largest 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 in. (sight); three in matching modern frames
Notes: George Maw (1770-1833), had a granddaughter, Anne Mary Maw (1830-1916), who married Alpheus Baylies Wood (b. circa 1827). Her brother was George John Maw (1832-1912), a talented botanical artist and correspondent with Charles Darwin, who is best know for the work, Monograph of the Genus Crocus. It is considered the most important book on the genus. It is intriguing to see carefully detailed botanicals from the brother-in-law and sister of this famed artist.. It leads one to suspect that they were either influenced by his work or were actively participating in George Maw's prestigious work, which began in the 1860s. These watercolors have been held by the family until offered here.
