(English, 1727-1787) Portrait said to be Samuel Lloyd, Esq (1701-1775), Trustee of the Colony of Georgia, seated, smiling and writing a letter, circa 1760, sitter and artist identified on old label verso that also indicates this painting was done in duplicate, oil on canvas, 29-7/8 x 25 in.; 19th century carved and gilt wood frame with label from "Geo. W. Rodway…Kensington", lined, restretched on older stretcher, craquelure; frame with wear to original gilt surface. Notes: Samuel Lloyd, Esq. was an eminent silk merchant who would be unanimously elected to the Trustees of the Colony of Georgia in 1747. He worked in London for Thomas Lombe who developed the mechanization for preparing raw silk for weaving. He encouraged Lloyd to travel to Italy to learn about the spinning process but he eventually chose to buy silk instead. Lombe also repeatedly asked Lloyd to travel to South Carolina to set up silk farms. The trip never occurred. When Lombe died, Lloyd bought his business in 1739 and became a prosperous businessman. The business eventually ceased in 1890 and the structure now houses the Derby Industrial Museum.. Provenance: Label verso for "H.E. Wright, Esq.", likely Herbert Edwin Wright, M.A., L.L., B (born 1864), Scholar of Trinity College, Cambridge; Estate of Mary Martha Blalock, Asheville, NC
