(Baltimore, Maryland, 19th century) Richard Fleming Foley, at age five (Baltimore, Maryland, 1833-1884); Southport, North Carolina), signed verso canvas "LK.T. Voigt pinxit/Balt Nov 2, 1838", oil on canvas, 30-1/4 x 25 in.; 19th century gilt wood frame, lined with clear liner, restretched on old stretcher, crackle, scattered retouch throughout primarily in areas of crackle and at small repairs, less than 5% of surface affected; frame with abrasions. Notes: Captain Richard Foley was a licensed East Coast pilot and marine master of merchant ships with a home port in Baltimore, Maryland. He served as a blockade runner in the Confederate Navy during the Civil War. He was acting Master of the [C.S.S. Arctic] which was later burned by the Confederates after the fall of Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1865. This ship was one of the vessels used by Elisha Kent Kane on his expedition to the Arctic in the 1850s.. Provenance: By descent in Foley Family, Southport, North Carolina
